MAESLANT BARRIER NEAR ROTTERDAM

Building monitoring with Strain Gauges

Monitoring the forces when closing the barrier with strain gauges. The installation takes place at a height of 20m.

The strain gauges are cast in a seawater-proof manner and covered with a seawater-proof steel housing.

EARTH STATION “RADOM” IN RAISTING

Structural monitoring at the industrial monument

After it was put into operation in 1964, the radome in Raisting provided, for example, live transmission of the Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969.

In 1985, the system was decommissioned and became an industrial monument. The storm “Bianca” destroyed the hull. This was rebuilt in October 2021.

Strain gauges are used to monitor the stress distribution in the textile material.

Prestressing force on tension rods
Installing strain gauges on steel bars adjusts the preload.
Prestressing force on tension rods
Prestressing force on steel profiles
The mechanical pre-tension is to be adjusted on two tension straps on the bridge. Strain gauges are installed to measure the preload.
Prestressing force on steel profiles
The tension straps are H-profiles with a cross section of 24,720 mm². They are equipped with a strain gauge every 90 degrees for averaging and to compensate for bending stresses.
Measuring the preload force
The strain gauges are connected via a 20m cable, 4x0.14mm², shielded, assembled with SubD15 connector for connection to GSV-2MSD-DI. 4 individual grids are connected in series (connection resistance 1400 ohms), supplemented with a passive supplementary network of 3 precision resistors 1400 ohms +- 0.1%, TK10 on an LSP-BCM connection circuit board to form a full bridge.
Monitoring of tie rods
To ensure the load-bearing capacity of the masonry on the west side of the St. Severin Church in Haldemarschen, an external and internal shoring construction is used. The tie rods that run through the masonry are equipped with strain gauges. The measurement data is saved on a website every hour. Alarms are triggered when threshold values are exceeded or fallen below.
