The unit of length is the meter. The meter is one of the seven base units of the SI system of units. All other units are derived from the base units. In the 18th century, the meter was defined as the ten-millionth part of a quadrant of the Earth's meridian. The section of the meridian from Barcelona to Dunkirk was chosen. In 1799, this natural measure was replaced by a standard made of platinum and in 1889 finally made of platinum-iridium ("Urmeter" in Paris). Since 1983, the length of a meter has been defined as the distance that light travels in a vacuum for a period of 1
In Great Britain (UK) and the United States of America (US) inches, feet, yards and miles are commonly used:
1 inch = 1/12 Fuß = 1/36 yard
1 inch = 25,4 mm
1 feet = 304,8 mm
1 yard = 914,4 mm
1 mile = 1,609 km = 1760 yards
The inch actually belongs to the old German unit system “line, inch, foot, cubit, fathom, rod, mile”. According to the old German system, 26.088mm would equal 1 inch. In the conversion tables according to DIN 4890, 4892 and 4893 (February 1935) it was determined:
1 Zoll = 25,400000 mm = 1 inch.
1 nautical mile (nautical mile) is 1.852 km.

1 geografische Meile entspricht 1/15 Äquatorgrad = 7,420 Kilometer.
1 Lichtjahr = 9,463 Billionen Kilometer = 63280 Astronomische Einheiten.
